When multiple language models are available, routing becomes an infrastructure decision rather than a prompt problem. Model selection impacts latency, cost, reasoning depth and failure modes.

Latency vs Reasoning Depth

Fast models are ideal for structured transformations. Larger reasoning models are better suited for planning and architectural decisions. Mixing them without explicit routing logic creates unpredictable behavior.

Fallback Strategy

Rate limits and degraded responses should be expected conditions. Clean fallback hierarchies prevent cascading failures.

Logging routing decisions allows measurable optimization. Without metrics, tuning becomes guesswork.
